The Health Benefits Of Triphala — You Should Know This!

Triphala powder

Triphala is a traditional herbal formulation that has long been a keystone of Ayurvedic medicine and has been used in India for more than 3,000 years.  No other herbal formulation is mentioned in the  ancient Indian “science of life” as often as Triphala is. Triphala is a Sanskrit word that means “three fruits.”

The remedy is indeed composed of the three dried fruits, which together form a powerful combination that works in a gentle, but profound way:

    • Amalaki (emblica officinalis)
    • Bibhitaki (terminalia belerica)
    • Haritaki (terminalia chebula)

Triphala treatment belongs to Rasayana system —  a crucial part of Indian preventive health care system and it is also used for treating some age related problems.  The medicine improves state of health, increases vitality, regulates balance of body, mind, and spirit.

What is the secret of the effectiveness of this medicine? Let’s try to at least slightly open the veil of secrets of the “three fruits” remedy.

Triphala: The composition of the magic Herb Concoction

As already mentioned, triphala is made up of three ingredients (amalaki, bibhitaki and haritaki). Such a triune union was created for a reason. Even in ancient times, people noticed that these fruits have extremely useful properties. And what do we know today about these plants?

Check greenAmalaki, also known as Amla, is a strong natural antioxidant containing high levels of vitamin C. It treats the common cold and fever, reduces inflammation, alleviates pain, promotes detoxification and has rejuvenating and anti-ageing power.

Check greenBibhitaki is another powerful ancient remedy. It  has demonstrated the ability to reduce levels of lipids and specifically lower the lipid levels in the liver and heart, reducing cholesterol levels and promoting heart health.

Check greenHaritaki is widely used in the traditional medicine of India to cure all stomach related problems from acidity to constipation. Haritaki helps in controlling blood sugar levels and decreases insulin sensitivity in the body.

Each of the components of triphala has a large set of vitamins, macro and micro-elements, minerals and other substances indispensable for the human body. It is amazing that the healing power of this medicine is in the unity of the three components. They enhance the action of each other, giving powerful properties to the whole formulation.

  1. Hey,

I’m always looking for something I can add to my daily supplement intake. Typically I try to get all of my vitamins and nutrients from my diet, but there are just some things you can’t get from food, or at least typical store-bought food. I read all the benefits and I must say if it’s true, this herb triphala seems like something I would be very interested in. I will say, there are a lot of people out there that claim their supplement is the best and sometimes it can be overwhelming trying to pick the right one. Can you tell me why triphala is something I should invest in over other supplements? How it stands out over others? Thanks for being so detailed in your article. It helps to know the facts.

    Regards,

    Michael

    1. Hi, Michael

Triphala is mainly used to improve the function of the gastrointestinal tract. Ayurveda believes that when you support a good digestion, you can sufficiently manage your weight, thereby improving your health. So, if in your life you stick to a healthy diet and have no problems with digestion, Triphala may be unnecessary for you.

      Best regards,

      Alex

  2. Hey Alex,

This is a very interesting article. I’m always looking at natural ways to treat minor digestive system troubles. I have tried many different medications for my digestion issues and haven’t found one that has worked. I may just have to give this a try!!

I never read in your article about if it would interact with other medications? That may be something I will just have to find out on my own.

    1. Hi, Elaine

Indeed, the only property of Triphala, unconditionally recognized by modern medicine, is a beneficial effect on the digestive system. So it worth a try. The only known to me contraindication is a combination with blood-thinning drugs.

      Kind Regards,

      Alex

  3. This was a very interesting article, Alex. I was not familiar with Triphala, even though I have explored herbal remedies off and on for many years. I appreciate that  you explain exactly what Triphala is as well as describe the different ways it can be used and to what benefit. I’m curious if you have any personal experiences using Triphala? It sounds like something I would like to try myself. Thank you for listing the contraindications because, not seeing anything that raises a “red flag” for me personally, I think Triphala might be a beneficial addition to my daily routine. Thank you!

    1. Hi, Cheri.

I take Triphala twice a year in order to help my digestive system to function better. When using Triphala, I forget about any problem with
gastrointestinal tract, and even my heartburn disappears all of a sudden.

      Kind Regards
      Alex

  4. Does that triphala contain probiotics for the digestive system, or does it work another way? I have to watch what I eat and drink otherwise my gut hurts bad.

Also, is it very common for people to have bad reactions with the triphala? I am looking to stop taking pills that only give me other side effects and it doesn’t fix the original problem. But I worry about side effects or bad reactions. I’m not on blood thinners or anything like that, so I’m good there, but I wasn’t sure if there were any more generalized reaction’s?

    1. Hi, Darrin.
Triphala acts as a mild laxative and improves the function of your digestive system. And usually it has no side effects, but you have to know, that Triphala is rich in fibers, so it may not be suitable for a sensitive stomach.

      Good luck
      Alex
